Wheelies, eyesore?
As you walk along Caroline Street, or any of streets which run west /east in Saltaire and turn your head to look up the road or passage as you pass you will see rows of cars or wheelie bins. Cars/ wheelie bins, cars /wheelie bins. The photograph above was taken on a Monday, the refuse collection is on Thursday.
The idea is that the bin should be kept in the backyard and put to one end of the passage for it to be emptied and then brought back. Obviously many people do not do this. Do you think they should? How could we encourage people to keep the passge ways clear of bins? Or is it just me? I have heard many people complain about the cars which are parked on the pavements on both sides of the road. Dealing with car parking is a very difficult problem, wheelie bins should be easier I think. What can we do?
I was saddened when wheelie bins were introduced in Saltaire, they are completely out of character with the village. They look horrible and make the alleys an obstacle course to walk down . They are ok for semis with gardens but are just too big for small back yards , especially if you have more than one (e.g. one for recyclables), which is possibly one reason they are left out .
It seemed strange to me, that about the same time World Heritage status was awarded the council carried out an act of self inflicted vandalism introducing these plastic lumps. They should have stuck with bins and bin bags.
I think the only realistic way of stopping them being left in the passages would be for the bin men to collect them from back yards and return them after emptying them. That or fines, which I am not in favour of.
On the day that I moved in 8 years ago, a nearby resident welcomed me and advised that all wheelie bins must be kept in the back yard. I have always done so ever since – I don’t find it a problem.
